What You Need To Know
Understanding common skin and nail conditions that affect the feet and toes.
Skin and Nail Conditions of the Foot
Athlete’s foot is one of the most common skin conditions affecting the feet. It is a fungal infection that’s highly contagious and can be spread through direct skin to skin contact as well as indirect contact. The condition can be spread directly when an uninfected person touches the infected area of someone who has athlete’s foot. Athlete’s foot can also spread indirectly through contaminated surfaces, clothing, socks, shoes, bed sheets, and towels.
Those who are affected by athlete’s foot may experience symptoms such as cracking, dryness, flakiness, itchiness, redness, or scaliness of the skin of the foot or in between the toes. Oozing, crusting, swelling, and the formation of blisters are other symptoms that may arise due to athlete’s foot.
Areas that are known to be damp, warm, or humid are commonly known to be more susceptible to carrying the fungal infection. With that being said, you should use caution around swimming pools and communal showers to avoid picking up athlete’s foot. If you know you have a weaker immune system, you should also be sure to use caution around these types of environments.
If athlete’s foot goes untreated, there is a high risk that it may spread from toe to toe. With this in mind, it’s highly recommended that you meet with a podiatrist for a professional diagnosis. Your podiatrist can examine the affected areas, confirm the source of your symptoms, and discuss the treatment options that best suit your case.
Preventing Skin and Nail Problems
Prevention plays a significant role in keeping your feet healthy and free from fungal infections and other common skin and nail concerns. Because fungi thrive in warm, damp, and humid conditions, being mindful of the environments you expose your feet to can go a long way in reducing your risk.
Keeping your feet clean and dry is one of the simplest and most effective preventive steps you can take. After showering, bathing, or swimming, thoroughly dry your feet, especially the areas in between your toes where moisture tends to linger. Changing your socks regularly and choosing breathable footwear can also help keep the skin dry throughout the day.
In shared environments such as locker rooms, gyms, swimming pool decks, and communal showers, wearing sandals or shower shoes can help you avoid direct contact with contaminated surfaces. Avoid sharing towels, socks, shoes, or nail clippers with others, as these items can carry fungal spores from person to person.
If you notice persistent itching, redness, flaking, discoloration of the nails, or any unusual changes to the skin on your feet, it’s important not to ignore them. Early attention allows for a professional diagnosis and helps prevent the condition from spreading or worsening, so you can get back to comfortable, healthy feet sooner.
